Sparrows
A Place of Healing
Aren’t two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s consent. But even the hairs of your head have all been counted. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. ~ Matthew 10:29-31 (CSB)
Sparrows is a children’s home for OVC based in Tarkastad. Children between the ages of two and eighteen are placed with us by the court for a period of two years. This period can be extended if necessary.
During the two years, the children receive special care to heal their emotional wounds and learn healthy ways to process trauma. Our resident social worker regularly provides both individual and group therapy sessions.
At the same time, an external social worker works with the children’s families to improve and prepare conditions at home. The ultimate aim is always to reunite children with their families. In cases where children are orphaned, extended family members such as aunts, uncles or grandparents will be prepared to care for the children when our care period ends.
None of our children have chosen their circumstances. Their circumstances do not define who they are. Circumstances can change. With love and empathy, we teach them to internalise that and that they are “worth more than many sparrows.”
At any time, the children’s home cares for an average of twenty-five children of varying ages. Our sleeping facilities are separated by age group and gender, with 24-hour supervision by six child care workers.
Kabouterland Educare Centre
Kabouterland is an NPO (202-623 NPO) affiliated to Sparrows and functions as an ECD and Aftercare Centre. The centre provides an opportunity for community members to work without exposing their children to neglect, while affording children the many life-long educational benefits that ECD provides.
While Kabouterland is independently registered, the Sparrows Governing Board has an oversight role and veto rights within the Kabouterland Governing Board.
